Research Fellow

I’m a ValCon Project (Value Conflicts in a Differentiated Europe: The Impact of Digital media on Value Polarization in Europe) Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. From 2016 to 2019 I was a PhD student in Political Science at University of Catania. During my doctorate, my research interest focused on social movements’ political communication. In particular, my research project revolved around analysis of alternative social networks as a new frontier of digital media. In parallel, I carried out research in the field of Italian territorial movements like No Muos, No Tav and No Ponte. On this subject, I co-authored two articles – “Do LULU Movements in Italy fight Mafia and Corruption? Framing Processes and ‘antisystem’ struggles in the No Tav, No Bridge and no Muos case studies” and “LULU Movements in Multilevel Struggles. A Comparison of Four Movements in Italy” in the journals PaCo – Partecipazione e Conflitto and Rivista Italiana di Politiche Pubbliche, respectively. In December 2016, I took part in the “Anticorrp UE7- PQ Cooperation” (Anticorruption Policies Revisioned – Global Trends and European Response to the challenge of corruption) project as a researcher. In 2015, I published the book Social Networks: new systems of surveillance and social control, where I analyzed how practices of surveillance and social control are being implemented on commercial platforms.

Communication creates partial organization: A comparative analysis of the organizing practices of two climate action movements, Youth for Climate and Fridays for Future Italy

Marco Deseriis, Lorenzo Zamponi, Diego Ceccobelli
This article focuses on a neglected aspect of the climate action movement Fridays for Future, namely, the relationship between its mediated communication practices and its early organizational processes. Drawing from a strand of organizational communication that underscores the constitutive dimension of communication to organizing processes, we analyze the significance of mediatized leadership and networked communication for the foundation and early development of two national chapters of Fridays for Future: Youth for Climate (YFC) Belgium and Fridays for Future Italy (FFFI).
