Civil Society and Activism in the Middle East

Picture description

For the first Cosmos Talk of the fall we will host Nadine Sika from the American University of Cairo on Civil Society and Activism in the Middle East on Sept. 29, 14-15.30, @Palazzo Vegni, Aula 2A

he presentation examines the impact of repression on civil society activism in the Middle East through the cases of Egypt and Jordan. It is argued that authoritarian regimes’ repressive strategies towards civil society actors vary depending on recent historical experiences with regime breakdown or continuity. Regimes transitioning from one autocratic rule to another after a breakdown often increase repression against all civil society actors to pre-empt large-scale mobilization. Consequently, fear is instilled within civil society, leading actors to either disengage from civic and political activism or turn to alternative forms of participation, such as social entrepreneurship. Conversely, long-standing authoritarian regimes that have not faced breakdown tend to utilize targeted repression and co-optation strategies while tolerating selective civic activism and contentious activities. Civil society actors in these contexts are frequently able to exploit political opportunities to mobilize for demonstrations at specific times and spaces, developing coalition partnerships to push for incremental reforms and change.

This article focuses on a neglected aspect of the climate action movement Fridays for Future, namely, the relationship between its mediated communication practices and its early organizational processes. Drawing from a strand of organizational communication that underscores the constitutive dimension of communication to organizing processes, we analyze the significance of mediatized leadership and networked communication for the foundation and early development of two national chapters of Fridays for Future: Youth for Climate (YFC) Belgium and Fridays for Future Italy (FFFI).
