Water struggles in Italy and Greece: strategies and outcomes

Picture description

The environmental politics working group is meeting for a discussion on opportunities and challenges relating to water struggles and water governance – covering questions of democracy, climate change, and legal mobilizations.

Guests:

Tommaso Fattori was among the main promoters of the 2011 referendum on water. An expert on common goods and public services, he served for many years as a consultant to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and has published numerous articles in Italian and international journals. He was a candidate for president and leader of the left-wing group in the Tuscany Regional Council in the 10th legislature.

Katerina Georgiadou is one of the main lawyers for the water movements in Greece since 2014, when the referendum against water privatization in Thessaloniki took place. She participates in current legal struggles to protect and reproduce water as a common and public good in all of Greece. She participates in diverse initiatives on the commons and in legal struggles to protect human and environmental rights.

Communication creates partial organization: A comparative analysis of the organizing practices of two climate action movements, Youth for Climate and Fridays for Future Italy

Marco Deseriis, Lorenzo Zamponi, Diego Ceccobelli
This article focuses on a neglected aspect of the climate action movement Fridays for Future, namely, the relationship between its mediated communication practices and its early organizational processes. Drawing from a strand of organizational communication that underscores the constitutive dimension of communication to organizing processes, we analyze the significance of mediatized leadership and networked communication for the foundation and early development of two national chapters of Fridays for Future: Youth for Climate (YFC) Belgium and Fridays for Future Italy (FFFI).
