Jimmy Matar is a PhD student at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology at Scuola Normale Superiore. His research project adopts a power from below lens to analyze prefigurative and contentious collective actions deployed in the buildup to, during, and after the October 17 uprising in Lebanon, while strategically situating them within and counter to the prevailing sociopolitical system.
Prior to joining SNS, he obtained his BA in International Relations and Diplomacy at Notre Dame University Louaize in Lebanon and MA in International Relations from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Professionally, he has extensive experience in research, programmatic strategy development, project management, data collection and analysis, and field work. He was and remains active in various struggles for change in Lebanon.
His key research interests revolve around social movements, contentious collective action, prefigurative politics, power from below, and social change.
