The workshop Aesthetics of Protest will take place from 9:30am to 4:30pm on December the 6th. Participants will discuss how visual culture, aesthetics and communication interplay with protest today.
On the 6th of December (9:30am-4:30pm), COSMOS will host the workshop Aesthetics of Protest which is organized in the framework of the research project The Aesthetics of Protest: Visual Culture and Communication in Turkey at University of Brighton (UK), Glasgow Caledonian University (UK), and Istanbul Bilgi University (Turkey), funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council of UK (AHRC).
Our investigation focuses on aesthetics of protest, in particular, how protestors use social media to communicate their messages, ideas, and identities. The workshop presentations will focus on our research on the Gezi Park protests that took place in 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey, and will explore humour, symbols, emotion, iconography, solidarity, performance, and social media. The project explores the intersection between art, protest, politics and social media.
We are interested in how visual culture facilitates communication between protestors, and how protest is performed. With this workshop, we aim at sharing the knowledge produced through our research with other scholars that focus on topics related to protest, visual culture, aesthetics and communication. This workshop as an opportunity to engage with other researchers working in the same field, to learn about their projects and findings, and discuss a book project.
