An interview with Donatella della Porta realized by COES – Centro de Estudios de Conflicto y Cohesión Social

Picture description

The wave of European protests developed after the 2008 financial crisis and the expansion of austerity policies have reopened the debate on the role that political and economic structures have in the understanding of social conflict. The transformations in the systems of political representation and economic distribution associated with the expansion of post-crisis neoliberal policies seem to be the key to understanding the rise and spread of recent waves of protests. In this interview, Donatella Della Porta reflects on the trends, challenges and dilemmas of the theoretical and empirical agenda on social movements and conflicts today.

Leonidas Oikonomakis
Exploring the case of the cocaleros of the Chapare, this article argues that more emphasis should be placed on mechanisms that are internal to the movements, such as: (a) the resonance of other political experiences at home and abroad, (b) internal struggles for ideological hegemony, and (c) the political formation of their grassroots.
