Populism and Popular Music – Manuela Caiani, Scuola Normale Superiore

Manuela Caiani will illustrate a project that investigates populist messages in popular music in Europe. The COSMOS Share talk will take place from 5pm to 6pm on the 12th of December

In recent years, a new form of political popular music has emerged: mainstream sounds with populist messages have gained widespread popularity beyond the confines of extremist circles. This recent phenomenon of commercially successful and widely received popular music does has some influence on the spreading of populist ideologies all across Europe? This presentation will illustrate a project exploring this issue introducing reflections on the epistemological, methodological and analytical aspects of this complex relationship.

Movement parties of the far right: The organization and strategies of nativist collective actors

Despite theoretical commonalities, very little empirical research has focused on far-right “movement parties” as collective actors operating both in the protest and the electoral arenas. The article redresses this inconsistency by exploring the organizational and strategic configuration of two far-right collective actors—the Hungarian Jobbik and the Italian CasaPound.
