Making of a common woman figure: Convergence and struggle of visual practices around Gezi’s icon – M. Ragip Zik, Free University Berlin

Going through the legacy of the “Lady in red” photograph linked to the Gezi Movement protest in 2013, this talk aims to discuss about visual convergence and struggle in contemporary popularization practices through an image of common woman.

Both Gezi Movement of 2013 and the military coup attempt in 2016 were important turning points in Turkey’s politics and social movement history. The country saw an unprecedented visual production and image circulation through the events and in the aftermath. A number of visual elements contributed to the politicization processes, including the photographs taken on site and illustrations following the events. Spontaneous photographs of ordinary people growing into icons of activism is no new, but what the ways in which the public life and resonance of these photographs are extended? How do visual activism practices make use of everybody figures in the context of political mobilization? Going through the legacy of the “Lady in red” photograph, this talk aims to discuss about visual convergence and struggle in contemporary popularization practices through an image of common woman.
